The alleged kingpin of an Irish crime syndicate has landed back in Dublin, straight from the flash pads of Dubai to a high-security cell. Daniel Kinahan, 49, was extradited and charged with directing a massive criminal empire that stretched its tentacles across Britain, Spain, and the US.
Kinahan's plane touched down on Sunday evening, and he was immediately whisked off to the Special Criminal Court in Dublin. The court slapped him with charges of running an international drug smuggling and money laundering operation. He’s now cooling his heels at Portlaoise Prison, about 145km southwest of the capital, with his next court date set for October 5.
Security was off the charts 🚦 — armed police, military, and a bombproof van were all part of the operation. The precautions are no surprise given the bloody gang war that’s been raging between Kinahan's crew and another Irish crime group, with 18 murders linked to the feud since 2016.
Kinahan has played it cool in public, denying the charges and calling himself a scapegoat. But the authorities aren’t buying it. They allege he orchestrated the smuggling of tens of millions in drugs and guns, all while running his empire from Dubai. It’s a high-stakes game, but for Kinahan, the stakes just got a lot higher.
