weed bust: £50k cannabis stash intercepted en route to county durham cafe

· 🇬🇧 UK · 2026-08-09 · 1 min read

Border Force officers kicked down a parcel containing 2.5kg of cannabis, worth about £50,000, before it reached The Beveridge Way Bistro in Newton Aycliffe. The licence holder, Huey Watson, claimed he was 'absolutely bamboozled' and denied any involvement. 🚔

Durham Constabulary rumbled the stash coming from Toronto, Canada, and called for an immediate suspension of the cafe's alcohol licence. They suspect the package might've been meant for someone else but are still concerned about the link to serious crime. The council’s licensing committee agreed to suspend the premises' alcohol licence and strip Watson of his role as supervisor while they review the whole ting. Watson insisted he had no idea what was going on, saying, 'I’ve always kept myself clean.'
