CHAPLETON: FROM GANG WARS TO PEACEFUL ENDS

Leeds Live Original source ↗
Chapeltown, once ravaged by gang warfare, is now a far cry from its violent past. A decade ago, the neighbourhood was at the heart of a brutal feud that saw multiple shootings and stabbings, including a notorious shootout outside Nite Trax nightclub during the West Indian Carnival in 2016. Four people were shot or injured, and three men were later sentenced for attempted murder. Today, Chapeltown is described as 'one of the safest places to live in Yorkshire' by long-time resident Leroy Clarke. The retired welder has lived in the area since he was 10, moving from Nevis. He says, 'Nobody bothers you if you mind your own business.' Despite ongoing crimeβ€”78 incidents were recorded in April 2026, with 52 being violent or sexual offencesβ€”the community is more vibrant and diverse. West Yorkshire Police agree that Chapeltown has transformed, praising it as a 'vibrant area full of different people and cultures.' A local laundrette worker who witnessed the Nite Trax shooting says there's now 'a lot more police' in the area, making her feel safer at night. Ola, a 42-year-old student from Nigeria, finds Chapeltown welcoming and lively, with a mix of cultures. Police remain committed to keeping the peace, working closely with community organizations and elected officials to improve quality of life.
